Dr. Daniel Warren of Envita Medical Centers Underscores the Importance of Targeted Lyme Treatments on The Mike Schikman Show
Lyme disease, which is one of the most commonly reported vector-borne disease in the United States, is not always easy to diagnose and treat, especially when the disease has progressed to its later stages. “There's a lot of associated infections with Lyme disease,” said Dr. Daniel Warren, N.M.D., Envita Medical Centers, who has 25 years of experience in treating patients with complex Lyme disease.
When a deer tick bites a human, it may transmit the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi, which causes Lyme disease. However, along with B. burgdorferi, the ticks may transmit other bacteria and viruses, which complicates the disease, highlighting the need for precision targeted treatments for Lyme disease. Lyme disease and its associated coinfections may lead to a wide variety of symptoms, which are caused by several factors, like the disease burden and the immune system status of each individual patient.
Dr. Warren explained that Lyme disease can be fairly treatable when patients are in the initial stage of the disease and are aware of tick exposure or tick bites, but it gets challenging when patients are unaware of exposure and the disease progresses to later stages. At this point, patients need precision targeted care as standard oral antibiotics or natural therapies may not be enough to impact the bacteria, which penetrates through the blood-brain barrier, causing neurological symptoms.
